Philodendron
Landscape Philodendrons, particularly Xanadu and Rojo Congo, are the highest-volume “architectural filler” plants in Philippine commercial and residential landscaping. Their neat, mounding habit and glossy leaves create a clean, modern look that works in virtually any tropical design.
Note: The popular Xanadu has been reclassified as Thaumatophyllum xanadu by botanists, but it’s still universally sold and known as Philodendron Xanadu in the nursery trade.
Popular Landscape Varieties
Xanadu — Compact, deeply lobed leaves forming a dense mound. The standard landscape Philodendron. Grows to about 1-1.2m tall and wide. Green year-round.
Rojo Congo — Larger, paddle-shaped leaves with reddish-bronze new growth that matures to dark green. Grows slightly larger than Xanadu, up to 1.5m.
Birkin — White-striped green leaves. Smaller, more commonly used as a container accent than mass planting.
Imperial Green — Large, upright leaves. More open habit than Xanadu. Good for shaded areas needing bold foliage.
Why It’s Popular
Clean Form — The tight, mounding growth habit looks intentional and maintained even without pruning. It reads “designed landscape.”
Shade Performance — One of the best plants for shaded areas that still need to look polished. Works under trees, along north-facing walls, and in covered corridors.
Minimal Debris — Unlike many tropical plants, landscape Philodendrons produce very little leaf litter. Pool-safe.
Low Maintenance — No deadheading, minimal pruning, and forgiving of inconsistent watering.
Landscape Uses
- Mass planting for groundcover effect
- Pool area edging and planting beds
- Shade garden filler beneath trees
- Modern and minimalist landscape designs
- Commercial property beds and planters
- Entryway and lobby plantings
Growing Requirements
Sun: Partial shade to filtered light is ideal. Tolerates morning sun but scorches in full afternoon sun. Deep shade produces leggy, open growth.
Water: Moderate. Prefers consistent moisture but handles short dry spells. Avoid waterlogged soil.
Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with organic matter. Amend heavy clay with compost.
Space: Plant Xanadu 0.8-1m apart for mass planting. Rojo Congo needs 1-1.2m spacing.

Care Tips
- Remove yellowing lower leaves at the base
- Fertilize with balanced fertilizer every 2-3 months
- Divide overgrown clumps to maintain shape or propagate
- Watch for snails and slugs, which favor the soft foliage
- Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Avoid direct afternoon sun, which causes leaf burn
