Pygmy Date Palm
Phoenix roebelenii
Pygmy Date Palm
The Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii) is the most popular small palm in Philippine landscaping. Its graceful, arching fronds and compact size make it the default choice for poolside planting, courtyard entries, and container displays. Where the full-sized Date Palm makes a statement at grand entrances, the Pygmy Date Palm brings that same elegance to smaller spaces.
Why It’s Popular
Perfect Scale — At just 2-3 meters mature height, it fits where most palms can’t. Ideal for residential gardens, patios, and indoor-outdoor transitions.
Graceful Form — Soft, feathery fronds arch elegantly from a slender trunk. Even young specimens look refined.
Versatile Placement — Works in the ground, in containers, beside pools, flanking doorways, or grouped in beds. Few palms offer this much flexibility.
Clean Habit — Minimal frond drop and no messy fruit. Pool-safe and low-debris.
Light Adaptable — Performs well in partial shade to full sun, unlike many palms that demand full sun.
Landscape Uses
- Poolside planting (the classic use)
- Entryway flanking, paired on either side of doors or gates
- Container planting for patios, balconies, and lobbies
- Small garden specimen or focal point
- Grouped in threes for a resort-style cluster
- Understory palm beneath larger trees
Growing Requirements
Sun: Adaptable. Grows well in partial shade to full sun. Partial shade produces softer, darker green fronds. Full sun is fine but fronds may yellow slightly.
Water: Moderate. Prefers consistent moisture but tolerates short dry periods. Does not like waterlogged soil.
Soil: Well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Adapts to sandy or loamy soils.
Space: Allow 1.5-2m spacing between palms. Container growing requires a pot at least 40cm diameter for mature specimens.
Size & Pricing
| Size | Height | Description | Approx. Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 2-3 ft | No visible trunk | ₱500 - ₱1,000 |
| Medium | 3-4 ft | Short trunk developing | ₱1,500 - ₱3,000 |
| Large | 5-6 ft | Clear trunk, full crown | ₱3,500 - ₱5,500 |
| Mature | 6-8 ft | Well-developed trunk | ₱5,500 - ₱8,000 |
Multi-trunk specimens (two or three palms grown together) cost more but create a fuller, more dramatic display. Pricing depends on trunk height and crown fullness.
Care Tips
- Water regularly during dry season; reduce in wet season
- Fertilize with palm-specific fertilizer 3 times per year
- Remove only fully dead, brown fronds; leave yellowing ones alone
- Watch for spider mites in dry, sheltered locations
- Sharp spines near the frond base: wear gloves when handling or pruning
- Protect from strong, sustained winds that can shred the delicate fronds
