About Tiger Boulders and Specimen Stone
Specimen-grade landscape boulders transform a property from “landscaped” to “designed.” A single well-placed boulder anchors a garden, signals a property entrance, or completes a water feature in ways that no manufactured element can match. The variation in form, weathering, and stone character is the appeal. No two specimens are identical, and the right specimen for a project is often selected from a curated inventory rather than ordered to spec.
Tiger boulders specifically refer to volcanic stone with the distinctive weathering pattern that gives the stone its tiger-like striped appearance. The Philippines produces excellent specimens because of volcanic geology in Batangas, Bicol, and parts of Mindanao. Curated Indonesian specimens supplement local inventory for clients seeking specific stone types.
How specimen selection works
For larger or specimen-grade pieces (medium and above, 200+ kg), the process is selection-driven rather than spec-driven:
- We photograph and document available specimens at our partner yard with dimensions, weight, and character notes.
- The catalog is sent for client review.
- Selected pieces are reserved with deposit and held until delivery.
- Installation logistics (transport, crane, placement crew) are coordinated to project schedule.
Smaller pieces and bulk landscape work ships from inventory matching size and character requirements without individual photo selection.
Placement and installation
Boulder placement is the difference between a great specimen and a mediocre one. Each boulder has a “best face” and a natural orientation that brings out its character. Repositioning a 500-kilogram piece after first placement is expensive and risks damaging the stone. We strongly recommend professional placement for specimen pieces.
For project-volume orders (multiple specimens for a single landscape), we send our landscape lead to walk the site with your designer or architect and place each boulder in coordinated relationship to the others. The composed grouping is what makes specimen boulder placement feel intentional rather than random.
Documentation and provenance
For institutional projects requiring sourcing documentation, we provide per-specimen origin statements with material type, geographic origin, and weathering documentation. For clients with sustainability or ESG reporting requirements, sourced-locally specimens (Philippine volcanic origin) can be documented separately from imported pieces.
We are BIR-registered. Sales Invoice, Official Receipt, and Delivery Receipt provided standard. COA-compliant documentation available on request for government projects.
Project Applications
Zen Garden Focal Points
Japanese-style and modern minimalist garden anchors. Single specimen or curated grouping. Pairs with raked gravel, native moss, and minimalist plantings.
Water Feature Surrounds
Pond edges, waterfall components, fountain accents. Natural stone integrates water features into landscape rather than appearing as installed objects.
Resort Landscape Statements
Hotel entrances, resort property markers, signature landscape elements that become part of a property's visual identity.
Property Entrance Markers
Estate gates, subdivision entrances, corporate campuses; specimen-grade boulders signal property tier without manufactured signage.
Sculptural Garden Elements
Architectural placement as standalone features. Selected for unique form, weathering pattern, or distinctive coloration.
Project Examples
Resort property entrance
Property identity statement at hotel entrance. Three curated specimens (largest 1.4 meters) selected from inventory, photographed, and reserved before delivery. Crane placement coordinated with landscape architect.
Private estate zen garden
Curated boulder grouping for residential zen garden. Multi-week selection process to find specimens with complementary character. Placed by landscape contractor under our supervision.

Procurement FAQ
How are boulders priced?
Boulders are priced individually based on size, weight, character (weathering, coloration, distinctive features), and current inventory rarity. Smaller accent pieces have approximate price ranges. Medium and larger specimens are quoted per individual boulder after selection. Specimen-grade pieces (500+ kg) are quoted with delivery logistics included.
Can I select specific boulders before ordering?
Yes for medium-and-larger pieces. We photograph available specimens with dimensions and weight, then send the catalog for selection. You reserve with deposit. Smaller accent pieces are typically delivered to spec rather than individually selected because they ship in mixed lots. For specimen-grade or signature pieces, in-person yard visits are coordinated for Luzon-based clients.
How are boulders delivered and placed?
Smaller pieces (under 200 kg) deliver on flatbed trucks with manual placement. Medium pieces (200 to 500 kg) typically require small crane or skid steer for placement. Specimen-grade pieces (500+ kg) require crane truck delivery with site placement. We coordinate the full logistics chain including placement crew.
What equipment is needed for installation?
For accent and small pieces, manual placement by a landscape installation crew suffices. Medium pieces require a small mobile crane or backhoe. Specimen pieces require crane truck (boom crane) with sufficient reach for site placement. We coordinate equipment with delivery; you provide site access for crane truck (typically 4-meter clearance, firm ground for crane outriggers).
Do you provide placement and installation services?
Yes. We coordinate placement with our landscape installation team or with your contractor. For specimen pieces, we recommend professional placement to position the boulder optimally on its best face. Repositioning a 500-kilogram boulder after first placement is expensive and risks damaging the stone.
Where do the boulders come from?
Primarily from Philippine volcanic regions (Batangas, Bicol, parts of Mindanao) where volcanic stone is naturally weathered to the patina that defines specimen-grade pieces. We also source selected Indonesian specimens for clients seeking specific stone types not found in the Philippines. Sourcing is documented per specimen for clients requiring origin documentation.
Can you source specific colors or types?
Yes within reasonable timeframes. If your project requires a specific stone type (basalt, andesite, granite), specific coloration (gray, dark, with mineral veining), or specific form (vertical standing, horizontal sitting, asymmetric), we can search inventory and coordinate sourcing. Specimen searches typically take 4 to 8 weeks depending on availability.
What is the typical delivery timeline?
Standard accent and bulk lots: 1 to 3 weeks from order. Medium specimens with photo selection: 2 to 4 weeks including selection and reservation. Specimen-grade pieces requiring sourcing: 4 to 8 weeks. Bulk landscape boulder lots for new property development: timeline coordinated to construction schedule.
Are boulders available outside Luzon?
For specimen pieces, yes with inter-island freight coordination. For bulk landscape work in VisMin, we typically source closer to project to reduce transport cost. Send project location for project-specific quote with logistics included.
Do you handle very large specimens (1+ ton)?
Yes. Specimens above 1,000 kg require oversized load permits, escorted transport, larger crane equipment, and pre-confirmed site access. These projects are quoted individually with full logistics. Our largest documented specimen placement was approximately 3.2 metric tons. Send specifications and we will assess feasibility.
